One of my goals in life is to be everything that Keith Olbermann is not, like honest, kind, constructive, loving, etc. Keith has his “Worst Person in the World” award where he destroys all chance of civil discussion on a subject by using hyperbole and character assassination to avoid actually debating a topic.
In the spirit of being the anti-Olbermann I am presenting my coveted “Best Person in the World” award!
The latest installment of the award goes to TIM TEBOW.
Tebow and the infamous "eye black"
I have to admit, I am a huge fan of Tim Tebow. I am also a huge football fan, however my admiration for Tim has nothing to do with his football ability. No, my admiration for Tim stems from what kind of man he is. He takes a stand and takes a lot of flack for it. That doesn’t bother him a bit though. He just smiles and keeps doing what he knows is right. The important thing to Tim is to do everything he does to the best of his ability to glorify his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He does mission work, visits leper colonies, visits sick kids in the hospital and on and on.
The crazy thing though is that people literally hate him because he loves God and his fellow-man and the thing most people find so repugnant is that he doesn’t keep it to himself. I have to laugh because I can’t figure out what in the world is so offensive, you would think that people would want all sports figures to be like Tim instead of like Tiger, Roethlesburger, et al. Instead, the NCAA is considering banning writing on eye black because people find Tim’s scriptures so offensive. Bible verses offensive??? I don’t get it.
Just to illustrate the insanity of this, I have a long time friend who is a big time liberal. He was telling some of us one day how tired he was of seeing the scriptures every Saturday. I asked him what was so offensive. He explained that there was a time and place for everything and football games were not the place for scriptures. Apparently football is so sacred that the sacred interferes with it or something? However,I guess saying “Hi Mom” and flashing gang signs is compatible with the solemnity of the occasion. I mean, it’s a game, I don’t get it?
Here is the funniest (or maybe saddest) part of the whole deal. He asked me, “What does “Philistines 4:13″ say anyway?”. If you are a Christian you will know what is funny about that, if you are one of the people who is offended by the scriptures you probably won’t understand what was so dumb about his comment. At any rate, how can someone be offended by something when they don’t even know what it says??? Beats me.
I watched the NFL draft a couple of weeks ago and was just appalled at the coverage. The big stories of the draft were why Colt McCoy and Jimmy Clausen weren’t drafted in the first round and why Dez Bryant and some others dropped so low in the first round. Do you think that is the stories they covered? Absolutely not. We were treated to three days of “Why did Denver trade up and draft Tebow in the first round” stories. We were assaulted by endless stories of how Tim’s throwing motion is flawed, he scrambles too much, he doesn’t scramble enough, Florida is a running team so Tim never throws, blah, blah, blah.
Here is the truth, Tim has a career QB rating of 121.2 (I think 129 or so is perfect) threw for nearly 10,000 years, ran for another 3,000, completed 66% of his passes, had 88 career TD’s and only 16 picks, winningest QB in NCAA history (only lost 7 games for his career), won 2 National Championships, first to win the Heisman as an underclassmen, nominated for the Heisman three times, I could go on for several paragraphs. Stats don’t lie, give me one reason this guy wouldn’t go in the first round?
The interesting thing was that as the NFL network covered the draft in the preceeding couple of weeks all of the “experts” kept telling us why Tebow wouldn’t make a good NFL QB and how he wouldn’t be drafted until the fourth or fifth round and how he would be converted to a tight end because he was such a poor NFL prospect at QB. To be fair there were two experts on the NFL network that predicted that Tebow would be drafted in the first round and would be a great NFL QB. Those experts were Jon Gruden and Jim Mora. It just so happens that those guys were the only two experts on the panel who had actually coached an NFL team and had actually drafted NFL players!
To add insult to bias and ignorance the other panel experts (besides Gruden and Mora) predicted that Denver (the team that drafted Tim) would try to experiment with him at tight end or something because there is no way Denver was planning on using such a poor prospect at QB.
Now I don’t claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer or an “expert” at drafting players, but I am smart enough to know that Denver did trade up in the first round of the draft to draft a player as an experiment. They drafted him to be the QB of the Broncos for the forseeable future! BTW, this is actually bad news for my team, the Chiefs, as Tim should be doing an Elway imitation on us for the next 10 years. I don’t care, I am going to root for him anyway!
So here’s a Mile High salute to you Tim Tebow! May God bless you, prove the critics wrong and use you to win souls for the Kingdom.
Here is hoping that more athletes will be like Tim. Here is hoping that the rest of these closet liberal “sports” commentators “will come out of the closet” like Olbermann and go to MSNBC so we don’t have to listen to them any more!
